The term Ratzliedli is composed of "ratz" in the sense of "zom Tratz", i.e. tease, irritate,
tease someone and "song", i.e. in sung form.

It is therefore a short joke or mockery song. In former times even the term "Tratzliedli" was often used. Mostly they are two- or four-line rhymes, which were sung in former times at dancing occasions, in the social gathering, at a Stobede, in a casual round, at the "zo Stobede goh", in front of the alpine hut, at the Chilbi and so on. The lyrics are rural, peasant, just folk poetry.

Thanks to their simplicity and punch line, they are often passed on orally for generations and experience many different variations. A typical feature of many text stanzas is the "double motif", where the inference
of the two opposing rhyming pairs can usually be anticipated.
