Old Swiss folk music, New folk music

Cancellation of the Alps & Edelweiss string music - Heimatklänge #2

Theater Casino Zug, Zug

Ancient and experimental sounds from the Alpstein.

This folk music concert has it all: the starting point is the traditional "Altfrentsche Besetzung" of Appenzell string music, consisting of violin, double bass and hammered dulcimer. It is supplemented by a second violin, double bass and drums, which enormously expands the tonal possibilities of the typical Appenzell "sound". The whole thing culminates in a sound journey as an expression of longing for what we are currently losing. The "abolition of the Alps" refers above all to the melting glaciers.

This ensemble, led by the eastern Swiss violinist Matthias Lincke, has invited one of the oldest Appenzell music ensembles to the concert. The traditional group Streichmusik Edelweiss cultivates a musical culture that is unique in Europe and contains more classical music than any other folk music. The "Original Appenzeller Streichmusik Edelweiss" was founded in 1913 by Hans Rechsteiner (1893-1986) in Trogen. Musicians from all corners of the Appenzellerland subsequently helped to shape the formation. After Rechsteiner's death, the Edelweiss string band lived on in Herisau. It is still welcome and extremely popular at concerts and gatherings today.

Every concert in the "Heimatklänge" series is a unique experience. The ambitious program is now entering its third season. The focus is once again on the highlights of new Swiss folk music, which always guarantee surprising musical experiences. Highly talented musicians with the necessary vision have thoroughly dusted off the Heimatklänge and created completely new sound horizons. Two groups will perform at each of the four concerts.

One traditional and one that creates something new from the traditional. They meet with great enthusiasm and respect for each other. They are all driven by the same basic idea that one's own roots are still the most beautiful foundation. The concerts in this series are a real treat, and not just for fans of new Swiss folk music. There is just as much room for down-to-earth music as for sophisticated light music.
