Fondation Pierre Gianadda, Martigny
Francis Bacon (1909-1992) is one of the most famous painters of the 20th century. He grew up in Dublin. His childhood was marked by the brutality of a violent father, who refused to accept his son's homosexuality as an adolescent and drove him out of his home. After wandering through London, Berlin and finally Paris, where he discovered drawings by Picasso that sparked off his vocation as a self-taught painter. His art asserts itself as an exorcism, in which he explores the portrait in a complex way, distorting and torturing it with intense commitment.
On the walls are a number of poignant self-portraits executed after the death of those closest to him, such as his partner Peter Lacy and his lover George Dyer.
This exceptional exhibition presents the unsettling work of this atypical artist of the last century, deeply committed to the representation of the portrait, with an unprecedented combination of paintings and photographs.
