Guided tour through the monastery gardens
‘Where spirituality and economy meet’

The monastery garden has taken on a new significance in our time as we search for our position within an increasingly technical civilisation. It is still a place of longing. The diversity of monastery gardens is fascinating, regardless of the extent to which they are historically characterised and whether they are more show gardens or kitchen gardens.

Although garden maintenance is now largely carried out by secular staff, they have access to a wealth of information. After all, not everything that grows in the lowlands thrives in the high-altitude valley of Engelberg, situated 1,000 meters above sea level. Monika Amstad, the manager of the monastery garden, together with Brother Thomas Stingelin OSB, will introduce visitors to the gardening culture of Engelberg Monastery during a guided and commented tour. This year, they will be joined by Daniela Kaiser, who has been managing the Capuchin Sisters’ monastery garden in Stans for the past three years.
