"Life at Sea - Leben auf See" - a traveling exhibition of the German Seamen's Mission

Hafenmuseum, Basel

The exhibition provides an unadulterated insight into life on the high seas and aims to raise awareness of the indispensable work of seafarers.

Cell phones, clothing, cosmetics, bananas... Almost everything we use every day comes by sea. 90% of global trade is transported by ship. The 1.7 million seafarers worldwide are on the move for all of us. Without seafarers, the shelves in the stores would be empty. Seafarers live and work on board for four to nine months, far away from family and home. Many things are not possible for them that are completely normal for us on land.

The photography project was launched in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic. The collection now contains over 5,000 digital images. It proudly shows the seafarers at work: on deck, in the engine room or in the galley; while they fold ropes, work with hoses and brushes, have times of solitude and miss their family, but at the same time enjoy the camaraderie on board.

This is the third seafarers' photo competition organized by the ITF Seafarers' Trust. It follows the 'Still at Sea 2020' and 'Out of Sight, Not Out of Mind 2021' competitions.
