The Morgestraich, with which the Basel carnival begins on Monday morning, is a magical moment and, for many, the highlight of the carnival. At exactly 4.00 a.m., the lights go out in Basel's city center - Kleinbasel and Grossbasel (see light extinguishing schedule). While the cliques simultaneously sing the same march "Morgestraich", their head lanterns and the 200 or so artistically designed procession lanterns light up in all their glory.
