Emmental alpine descent
Sumiswald
The Emmental Alpabfahrt celebrates the return of the summered cattle in the villages of Sumiswald and Wasen with a traditional alpine cattle drive.
The cattle drives in the municipality of Sumiswald are always extremely popular. In the villages of Sumiswald and Wasen, the return of the summered cattle is celebrated with a traditional Alpine descent on the Friday before the day of prayer.
The shepherd families approach the villages with their 850 or so cattle, lovingly garlanded with flowers, to the sound of bells ringing and interspersed with whooping. The cattle, beautifully groomed, with flowers around their foreheads and bellies and embroidered straps with bells and trychels around their necks, are the pride and joy of the farming families.
